Quick Room Styling Guide…Just The Basics

It’s no secret that I love flowers and that I find having them around brightens up a room in any season. I’ve been cleaning the living room this morning and that involves stripping it down to the bare minimum. It just seems to make sense that it’s easier to do the dusting and the floor mopping with the clutter put away…don’t you think? I have a few tips for you today based on my own methods of putting things back in order and accenting a room with just a few key pieces.
My bare naked living room is now clean! I’m so excited that I’ve been following along with the Kon Marie Method of cleaning and organizing and the decluttering has definitely been somewhat of a life changer.

That being said…although clean, it’s too stark with nothing in it, and here are some super fast ways that I style and some general tips.
I don’t follow rules when it comes to decorating or design, but I do feel that every room should have a focal point. That rule is a good one, as it draws your eye to one key piece and the rest will then flow from there. In this room it’s the vintage faux fireplace mantel. The old iron gates flank it and the chandelier is in front for glitz, room light and to reflect in the mirror.
I started with my hydrangeas that I purchased at the grocery store this past weekend. There were enough to fill 2 aqua Mason jars.

Grouping vignettes tends to look better in odd numbers, like three or five…so I played around and found that I had some faux peonies in my crafting supplies and created a floral trio.

You don’t need a mantel as a focal point obviously…a bookcase from Ikea makes for a great standout piece and I’ll share how I customized the one in my office in another post soon.

Same spot, different flowers with the ironstone pitcher holding more blooms that are real. You could easily go outside when the weather is warm enough and clip some branches from a tree or wild flowers to use in vases.
A few simple vintage bottles soften up the arrangement and again…I used uneven numbers…
There, that looks good and see how easy it was to put together?

That old pink bench was dragged back into the living room to use as a functional coffee table. I arranged some more flowers (hey, it’s my birthday week so we have lots in the house!} pink candles on a white tray.

Benches are great to have on hand for extra seating, and I try and keep key versatile pieces of furniture around that can be used in different rooms for different functions. If you don’t have one, try your hand at building one from a pallet or search thrifts for something that can be upcycled.

Don’t forget a few pillows, which in my opinion can make or break a room! This ruffled sham is designed as bedding, but I love to use bed pillow shams on a sofa!
You could try your hand at dying white bed pillow shams, as I did with the one below.
