DIY Cupcake Stand – From Old Lamp Parts

The first thing that you’ll need to do is to head to the thrift shop or a yard sale and look for old lamps. I love thrift shopping and share some tips in THIS ARTICLE. Not a thrift shopper or dislike yard sales? Alternately you can head over to eBay that is a treasure trove of vintage fare. It’s more than possible to create beautiful objects for you home while staying in a budget if you think outside the box! The lamp bases below are brass and I removed them from several lamps that had outdated porcelain mid-sections that just aren’t my style and had damage.

Additionally I had an unfinished (raw metal) base that I purchased (on eBay) but if you take apart an old lamp it will work exactly in the same way. In my planning, I decided to combine this base with a pastel Limoges floral plate from my collection. You could use any plate that you might find and again, thrift stores and yard sales are great sources for cast-offs!
Before you begin painting your DIY cupcake stand I would recommend cleaning the metal of all dust and debris.  I like to use TSP (trisodium phosphate), which is cleaner and degreaser and perfect for metal projects.

While you are out thrifting look for some pretty floral plates. Maybe you already have some on hand that are singles or mismatched china pieces? Perfect for this project! Look at Etsy for Limoges china single plates which can be well priced as THESE are.

  • Gather up some acrylic craft paints in shades to coordinate with your plate. Pastels look particularly pretty if you are going to make a few of these cupcake stands for a bridal or baby shower or a spring tea party. Grab your base and give it a coat of primer paint then let dry. Next you’ll paint the base with the colored craft acrylics of your choosing and let dry. A second coat may be required and you’ll be the judge and jury on that one. Once dry and you are happy, spray on a sealer so that it could be washed by hand later on. There are no rules with the base that you find and just see what works with what you have!

DIY Cupcake Stand Tip

It’s easy as pie (or cupcake:~) to put your stand together, as lamp bases generally have a flat surface so the plate or bowl with glue on quickly. I used a multi-purpose waterproof glue for this project and it’s useful to have on hand for many projects throughout the home. Allow to dry overnight before moving around for use.

Top it with a glass cloche after filling with cupcakes or your favorite cookies and it looks festive on a table for Mother’s Day or a bridal shower.

If frou frou isn’t your style, alternately you can simply take the same idea and use raw metal lamp stands with plates that are more attuned to your aesthetic. These are some vintage French plates (one is a bowl) that are damaged, so I had no remorse in creating a few stands.

  6. OMG Janet. This is exactly what I needed. My husband cut a bunch of slices of wood for my daughters upcoming wedding. I was trying to figure out what I could use for a pedestal for them that would be sturdy enough. What a genius idea my friend. Thank you as always for coming up with the coolest DIY’s.
