How To Add Understated Coastal Style To Your Home

I hope that you enjoyed your summer weekend! We spent our weekend up at the beach home and spent an ENTIRE DAY relaxing on Saturday. Heavenly and rare, because it seems that there is always so much to be done. Sometimes you need a day like that and after a day out on the beach, a nap and a fresh fish and asparagus dinner that I prepared... I binged watched a series on Netflix of Grace and Frankie.

So now...on to coastal decorating and some tips from my perspective...

I have a deep love of collecting vintage and despite changes in attitude and updating my style over the years I doubt that my excitement over finding something great at a flea market will ever wane. That being the case, I have quite a bit of vintage here at the beach, because I've had great luck in finding inexpensive pieces close by. Like the shell encrusted bottle, the vintage demijohn,  the amaaaazing pair of vintage architectural corbels and that blue wood box on the bottom shelf...

We built the table and you can read more about that here if you are a DIY sort. I made that large bowl...back in the day when I focused on hand thrown pottery. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of my pottery left..but that is a whole other story.

One thing that you WON'T see here is that sort of contrived "Coastal or Beach Cottage" look because this lady isn't a fan of contrived and that's how I unapologetically feel. I see it a lot on-line and in people's homes I've been to in the area here, but I believe that you can add that sea washed look with collections and colors (as in the above).

I sourced this gorgeous bottle collection and all you would need to do is to set them on a table or a shelf and have an instant coastal feel.

These are some of my styling props and every day objects that I store in a glass door step back vintage cabinet. In this post you can see more of the cabinet and the room. All of the above was found inexpensively over years of careful curating and shopping both local and on-line.

Vintage glass or even new glass in blues and sea greens are perfect for summer and a coastal feel. These are old glass grapes and I've set them into a vintage bowl that has gilded gold trim...

Anything sea shell and everything from the sea are wonderful ways to evoke that natural beach feeling. Although this tablescape is at our beach home it could be anywhere and make it feel like a weekend on the coast. My tips would be to keep it simple and always understated...

Old glass fishing floats in a mother of pearl style bowl, a foam boat buoy that I found recently washed up on the beach and that encrusted bottle are placed down the center of the table and add color and suggest an escape to the coast.

I'll be joining in later this week some favorite bloggers for a coastal themed party, so stay tuned for that! For more vignettes and beach house decor you can find that HERE...
