How To Create The Perfect Dining Space

When working with an open-concept home, you have the advantage of a flexible layout that allows you to define different zones. The best way to take advantage of this is by using your space wisely.

How? Start by measuring the space you have and consider the overall dimensions. Take note of any architectural features, such as windows or columns, that could influence the placement of your dining area.

By understanding the size and layout of your space, you can determine the best dining setup and have a clearer picture of what to change.

But, before you dive into the design process, let’s pause and think about the gatherings you can host. Asses what type of gathering you usually have at home.

Do you entertain, or is your table going to be just for family dinners? How many people do you usually have over for dinner? Are there casual dinners or more formal ones?

Consider the size of your typical dinner party and if the furniture you currently own will do, or if you’re open to buying new pieces. These insights will guide you in creating a dining space that caters to your unique lifestyle.

Choosing the Right Dining Table

The dining table serves as the centerpiece of your dining space, so it’s essential to choose one that fits both your dining area and overall style. It all depends on how much space you’re working with, but as a general rule, you want to keep your dining table on a scale to the other furniture in the space.

A rectangular table is a classic choice that works well in most settings, while a round or oval table can soften the lines of a room and promote conversation.

In my experience, round tables can work best for small or square spaces while rectangular tables work well in larger rooms and narrow ones.

Remember: To avoid traffic flow, allow each guest a minimum of 24″ of table surface and more if possible.

Complementary Seating for Your Dinner Space

Opt for chairs that align with the style of your table and overall decor. Upholstered chairs add a touch of elegance and comfort, while wooden or metal chairs can bring a more rustic or industrial vibe.

Consider not only the size of your table but try to find chairs that are on scale with the table when doing a mismatched look. I always love mismatched and not sets because it gives room for more character.

Size is important and number one is space planning don’t forget that if you are mixing and matching that you’ll need to choose chairs that will fit comfortably around the table and with leg room!

Setting the Mood with Table Decor

Once your dining space set up is ready, it’s time to focus on styling it! First, let’s set the foundation. Choose a tablecloth or runner that harmonizes with your dining room’s color palette, giving your dining space an elegant touch.

Personally, I’m a fan of linen and organic fabrics but if you prefer something more spill-friendly, you can find some stunning options! I’m linking my favorites below 🙂

TAP TO SHOP

Go for dinnerware that reflects your personal taste, whether it’s sleek and minimalist, timeless and classic, or bold and eclectic. Give your dining table a more personalized look with small accent details to spruce it up.
Floral arrangements, candle holders, decorative napkins, and napkin rings along with unique place cards will add a pop of color and charming style that will transform your entire space!

  1. hey Janet!
I live in Charlotte and we go to church with your brother and Margie! She gave me your site because we are remodeling our kitchen and I was looking for ideas! I have loved following your ideas and your beach house turned out great!
I am looking for handles for our new white kitchen cabinets, can you give me your advise!!
I am using brass as my main metal on Chandeliers, floor vents, light switches etc. I love a more formal glass and brass shinny look! We settled on Quartz Caeserstone Frosty Carrina for our working space countertops. The island will be Leathered Taj Mahal and dark stained base to match the dark wooden floors.. The cabinets will be painted BM simply white, so here is my question…..we are doing all cabinet front appliances except the Ovens have stainless steel handles, so what type of metal finish should I put on the handles on the white cabinets.
I want to do brass but it will not match the ovens will that look off? That would put the brass handle on the refrigerator right next to the stainless steel ovens handles!
    WHAT DO YOU THINK!!
Thanks for any input you can give me, I really appreciate your help!
    Blessings,
    Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy, nice to e-meet you via Margie 😉 I would use brass if that’s what you love and not worry about matchy-matchy or clashing. My handles are a slightly darker finish than the typical lower end handles one might find at the home improvement stores. Mine are the Lugarno aged brass pulls from Restoration Hardware. Good luck!
