Ahh, summer and the ease of it all with entertaining lightly in terms of the table and the menu! As I was getting this table ready for an informal dinner at our beach home you can’t see what’s on the other side which is still being updated and is getting close to completion. I’ll be sharing that with you soon and all of the fun new things that I’ve been adding in.

I started my table with some beautiful table linens that I received from our generous sponsor MINTED. Since I’m in Florida and am a huge fan of a coastal look year round, I selected the BRETON STRIPE table runner and napkins in the Cornflower Blue. I think that by now most of us are familiar with MINTED, but if not Minted is a design marketplace that connects you to unique products from the world’s best emerging artists and helps you bring your style to life across homes, holidays, and occasions. I love hand designs and this set has a hand painted look.

My floral selection might surprise you a bit, but here at the beach we have a limited selection of places to shop for florals and I didn’t care for what they had today. Please don’t tell (*-*) that I very quickly broke off a few branches from a freshly blooming Crape Myrtle tree in their parking lot. Crape Myrtle is beautiful, but I have to warn you if you’ve never brought it inside that it’s VERY messy.

So now you can see that I have a color scheme going on here, and that’s my favorite tip for setting a table. Decide on your color scheme first and look to flowers available for your inspiration du jour.

With my BRETON NAPKINS from Minted I went casual by simply folding them and placing them on the top salad plate.  Nothing fancy…my vintage white ironstone dinner plates, each topped with a vintage white salad plate that has a faded gold rim and some loose shells and beach glass from outside scattered on top. Easy as a summer day.

The driftwood look of the table that we built several years back only looks better over time and I’m so pleased with it’s upkeep of doing nothing! If you’re considering building your own table we have several tutorials for you, including THIS ONE and THIS ONE that was built with NO NAILS.

Aqua…I love this color so much and what color could possibly be better for imbuing a coastal look! You don’t to go all out crazy and add aqua to everything in sight, and a few accessories to have on hand will work well for all seasons. I have added some glass fishing floats and these are real vintage ones that I’ve had for years, but you can easily find reproductions in many home decor stores now. The water goblets are acrylic but have high style and we can take them outside with no worries of breakage. Since summer should be simple…look for acrylic-ware where you shop.

5 Simple Summer Entertaining Tips For A Coastal Look

  1. Start with a summery color theme in mind and aim to keep the colors sun and sea washed and breezy.
  2. Once you have your palette in mind, look for flowers for a centerpiece or bouquet that will compliment. The flowers don’t have to be expensive florist shop varieties, clip from your yard or the roadside or substitute with silks.
  3. Choose summery linens such as napkins, table runners or placemats in easy care breezy fabrics.
  4. Mix and mingle in some beach finds like sea shells, a glass vase filled with sand or candles in aqua or sand tones.
  5. Don’t overfill your table setting and keep it light and loose and no tablecloth required for an informal appeal.

Janet, I’m so loving your blog! I am brand new and this is my first comment. I live on the Eastern Shore of MD, about 45 min. from the Chesapeake Bay, and 1 1/2 hr. from Ocean City, MD. So, without question, I have always loved a coastal/nautical decor theme! I love your simplistic, lovely table setting! And like you, I like shades of aqua… and my new favorite color is turquoise.
Last evening, I printed your 2018 calendar and several others and I’m going to frame them.
Thank – you for a wonderful blog, Janet.. ?

    1. I’m so sorry that I haven’t had a chance to respond and I’m thrilled to hear that you enjoy my work Denise! xo

I love this table and chairs. I live in Australia do you know a supplier that would have something similar. I’m looking for a coastal feel.

    1. Thank you and we made the table! The chairs were from Restoration Hardware and not sure if you have them there?

  4. Kareen weidenfeller says:

    Hello
Do you know the color of your chairs? Are they still holding up strong? Ballard or Amazon?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Kareen! The chairs are actually from Restoration Hardware but a number of years ago and they no longer carry them. They were expensive, but you can find more budget friendly options on Amazon nowadays such as these: https://amzn.to/3HnZgQN
